The historic option to the belt is being more and more appreciated in the wardrobes of modern gentlemen and aspiring ones. Their value? They do not break the continuity of the suit and allow the natural pull of gravity so that the front crease retains its knifelike line. On the other hand, the buckle of the belt tends to overload the trousers, producing an annoying visual effect. Braces can be X or Y-shaped, with leather or knitted buttonholes or with the ever-despised clips. Fabrics range from silk to rayon, they can be elastic or not and few people know that originally they were made in exact sizes, just like belts.
Curiosity: in the early years, protocol dictated that braces be concealed, thus gentlemen were hiding them with the vest and the buttons were stitched on the outside of the waistband. When men started to going vestless, tailors had to affix the suspenders to the inside of the waistband. Needless to say, never wear braces along with belt. The social consideration gathered by wearing a good pair of suspenders will fade away in case the gentleman decides to use both these accessories.
A tip: when using them, have the belt loops removed by a tailor. The balance game works here too: a striped pair is more advisable with a solid shirt, in order to avoid that unpleasant “visual noise”.

L’alternativa storica alla cintura sta prepotentemente tornando a popolare gli armadi di molti gentlemen ed aspiranti tali. Il loro pregio? A differenza della fibbia della cintura, che tende ad appesantire il pantalone producendo un fastidioso effetto visivo, queste non “rompono” la continuità dell’abito e reggono i pantaloni in modo da conservare la vita dritta. Possono avere forma di X o di Y, asole in pelle o di maglina oppure presentare le tanto vilipese clip. I tessuti spaziano dalla seta al rayon, posso essere elastiche e non, e in pochi sanno che prima dell’arrivo delle pinze regolabili, le bretelle erano divise per taglia, proprio come le cinture.
Curiosità: anticamente il buon gusto imponeva di coprirle, pertanto i gentiluomini avevano gioco facile con i gilet che nascondevano i bottoni, cuciti sulla parte esterna dei pantaloni. Con la graduale scomparsa del gilet (tornati per fortuna in auge di recente) i sarti hanno iniziato a nascondere i bottoni sulla parte interna dei pantaloni. Inutile dirlo, mai indossare bretelle insieme alla cintura; se un buon paio di bretelle può far guadagnare oggi anzianità nella considerazione sociale di un gentleman, con la medesima solerzia questa svanirà nel momento in cui il gentiluomo in questione decidesse di utilizzarla insieme alla cintura.
Un consiglio: quando si indossano, è bene far rimuovere i passanti dei pantaloni. Il gioco degli equilibri vale anche per questo tema: una bretella regimental è in genere più indicata con camicie in tinta unita, per evitare quello che con una pertinente sinestesia verrebbe definito “rumore visuale”, prodotto dall’abbinamento di troppe fantasie.
