The interview - L'intervista
Denis was born twentynine years ago in Snia, a small town outside Milan. Humble origins, not “poor” because – he points out – “the word ‘poor’ evokes something ugly, whereas despite not being wealthy, after all we were an happy family”. He attends an hospitality training institute and all along nurtures his passion for menswear. Young parents and a super grandfather who was a workman in the close Snia factory: despite his night shifts, he used to bring the little Denis to see boxe matches.
Denis nasce ventinove anni fa a Snia, una frazione nella provincia di Monza e Brianza. Origini umili, non “povere” perché – sottolinea – “il termine ‘povero’ rimanda a qualcosa di brutto, invece noi avevamo poco, ma eravamo tutto sommato una famiglia felice”. Frequenta la scuola alberghiera e coltiva da sempre la passione per l’abbigliamento. Genitori giovani e un super nonno che faceva l’operaio presso la fabbrica Snia e che, nonostante i frequenti turni di notte, lo portava a vedere la boxe.
The first impact with “elegance” was at his grandmother’s local millinery shop; he was 13 and already collecting Ralph Lauren Garments. One day the unexpected award: during a contest for collectors of the brand, Ralph Lauren himself defines Denis a “collector of dreams” (http://www.rlvintage.com/about-vintage/collectors/denis). He is the only Italian in this chart and declares to approach life the same way, with passion and a strong desire to fulfil his personal projects.
La prima infarinatura al mondo del bello è stata nel negozio di cappelli da donna di sua nonna; aveva 13 anni e già collezionava capi Ralph Lauren, poi un premio inatteso: viene notato durante un concorso per collezionisti del brand e definito da Ralph Lauren in persona un “collezionista di sogni” (http://www.rlvintage.com/about-vintage/collectors/denis). Unico italiano in questa classifica, Denis dichiara di approcciare la vita nello stesso modo, con passione e tanta voglia di realizzare i suoi progetti personali.
After a long period spent working along with the designer Stefano Durelli, he was spotted by Ermanno Lazzarin, owner of Eral 55, en elegant menswear boutique in Corso Como, Milan. Today he works there as a salesman and manages at the same time Sartoria Lazzarin, that I visited during the interview.
Dopo un lungo periodo trascorso lavorando al fianco dello stilista Stefano Durelli, viene notato da Ermanno Lazzarin, titolare dell’elegante boutique Eral55 in Corso Como a Milano. Tutt’oggi lavora lì come venditore e gestisce al contempo la Sartoria Lazzarin, che ho avuto modo di visitare durante l’intervista.
Dreams and dedication of this guy are taking him far: from the collaboration with the fellow Jumpei in Tokyo, to the cover on the Japanese magazine Leon, not to mention the recent participation to the “Dinner for 25”, organized by Scott Schuman, aka The Sartorialist. Last but not least, he plans to launch in the future his own brand. Proprio i sogni e la determinazione a fare della sua passione il suo lavoro, lo stanno portando lontano: dalla collaborazione con il collega Jumpei a Tokyo, alla copertina sulla celebre rivista giapponese Leon, passando per la recente “Dinner for 25” organizzata da Scott Schuman, aka The Sartorialist. Last but not least, ha in cantiere il lancio di un suo brand “che lasci qualcosa di lui a chi lo indossa”.
Distinctive features: a tatoo of a sailer with broken sails on the forearm, to remember the tough moments he had to face in his life, and a writing on the chest saying “Defend it or lose it”. This is certainly a little Italian storiy of success in fieri, spiced with passion, determination and tenacity. The cinematographic comparison with the movie “The pursuit of happiness” is served: “Don’t ever let somebody say you can’t do something, If you’ve got a dream, you’ve got to protect it. If you want something, go get it, period.”
Segni particolari: il tatuaggio di un veliero con vele strappate sull’avambraccio, a monito delle difficoltà che ha dovuto affrontare nella sua vita e una scritta in petto che dice “Defend it or lose it”. Una piccola storia tutta italiana di realizzazione personale in fieri, condita con passione, determinazione e tenacia. Il parallelo cinematografico con “La ricerca della felicità” è servito: “Non permettere mai a nessuno di dirti che non sai fare qualcosa. Se hai un sogno lo devi proteggere. Se vuoi qualcosa, vai e inseguila, punto.”
