Dudes, oggi alcune considerazioni sulla pochette e sui vari modi di piegarla!

As Brunello Cucinelli says: “The pocket square for a man is like the bag for a woman, it should be never missing”. No matter whether you call it “pochette” or “handkerchief”, a lot has been said and written about this accessory. Inexplicably absent in the breast pocket of Italian politicians and showbiz personalities, one could think it is only worn by people of the industry and style lovers. Nothing wronger: that pocket is there for a reason, which is not only to hold the sunglasses.
Sufficient reason for social disapproval is surely to choose identically patterned pochette and tie. Elegance means “balance” and the trick is to find the right match between shirt, jacket, tie and pocket square as for the fabric and the pattern. For instance, a wool or cashmere pocket square is better with a tweed jacket just like a solid one is more advisable if combined with a striped shirt and a patterned tie. Fabrics range from silk, to wool and from cashmere to linen and cotton; measures are diverse, but 40x40cm, hand-rolled pocket squares have a particular charm.
Regarding this mysterious accessory, a common and old doubt is about “how to wear it”. The web is charged with photos of origami-shaped or ufo-shaped handkerchiefs and there are many ways of folding, but surely those stiff four peaks coming out of the breast pocket do not get on well with the so-loved and all-Italian sprezzatura. Whether it be squared, with two, three of four peaks outside, “rose-shaped”, with just the center outside or with both center and peaks outside (the last one is very elegant), the best is to wear it with nonchalance. An old saying goes: “Elegance means forgetting what you are wearing”. Wise words.

“La pochette per un uomo è come la borsa per una donna, non deve mai mancare” è solito dire Brunello Cucinelli. “Pochette” per i più raffinati, “fazzoletto da taschino” per gli amanti delle perifrasi e del patrio idioma, comunque lo si chiami, tanto si è scritto e si è detto su quest’accessorio inspiegabilmente assente nel taschino dei politici italiani e di personaggi dello show business. Si potrebbe pensare che sia appannaggio dei soli addetti ai lavori e appassionati del settore, niente di più errato: quel taschino c’è per un motivo e non è solo quello di conservare gli occhiali da sole.
Motivo sufficiente per la riprovazione sociale è certamente scegliere una pochette nella stessa fantasia della cravatta. Eleganza è equilibrio e il gioco è trovare il giusto bilanciamento tra camicia, giacca, cravatta e pochette quanto a grammatura e fantasia. Una pochette in lana o cashmere è preferibile, ad esempio, con le giacche in tweed così come una tinta unita è più indicata se abbinata con camicia rigata e cravatta dai motivi grandi. I tessuti vanno dalla seta, alla lana, passando per cashmere, lino e cotone; le misure sono delle più varie, anche se le pochette 40x40 cm, orlate a mano, hanno un fascino particolare.
In merito a quest’oscuro accessorio, un diffuso ed annoso dubbio è “come portarlo”. Come per la cravatta, anche qui il web è prodigo di foto di fazzoletti a forma di origami o di ufo volante, spacciati per nuove tendenze. Premesso che la precisione millimetrica delle quattro punte ben inamidate fa a pugni con la sprezzatura che ci contraddistingue e ci fa apprezzare nel mondo, i modi sono svariati: squadrata, con due, tre o quattro punte in su, “a rosa”, con solo il centro fuori o con centro e punte fuori (quest’ultimo particolarmente elegante). Comunque la si pieghi, è appropriato ricordare il vecchio detto: “Essere eleganti significa dimenticarsi cosa si ha addosso”. Sante parole.
