During a recent trip to the New York I visited Mr Taji in his showroom of Manhattan, on Madison Avenue. Taji, nome de plume for Tacettin Seker, is a forty-three –year-old Turkish tailor who owns three shops in Istanbul offering a bespoke tailoring service and luxury ready-to-wear clothing. He is what I would call a travelling tailor, reaching his customers everywhere in the world to ensure the best possible service. He set up his business in Istanbul in 1998 with a shop in the wealthy Nisantasi district; the business took of and in 2001 he landed in New York with a showroom that comprises a workshop too. Today he employs forty-five artisans in the Turkish capital, producing bespoke suits and shirts, the latter either hand-made or machine-made, for a fancy clientele.
Taji works with Italian and British fabrics and his signature, for the customers who want it, is a contrasting buttonhole on the lapel or on the sleeve. His jackets have a longer fianchino (vertical seam on the front of the jacket and parallel to the side – see photo below), the centre back is hand-made and the shoulder is never empty, but rather rounded and padded. During the visit to the showroom, a detail catches my attention: a horizontal pleat (not vertical) underneath the lapel (pictured below) for a customer with large chest. Taji creates the paper model after having taken the measurements for the first time and after the delivery amends the paper model, if needed. Trousers are made inside his workshop and as for the jackets, the armhole is “open” and they generally have two buttons, since the three-roll-two is considered too Neapolitan.

Durante il mio ultimo viaggio a New York ho fatto visita a Mr. Taji nel suo showroom di Manhattan, in Madison Avenue. Taji, all’anagrafe Tacettin Seker, è un sarto turco di quarantatré anni, ad Istanbul è titolare di tre negozi in cui unisce il bespoke tailoring al ready-to-wear di lusso e rientra appieno nella categoria dei sarti viaggiatori, che raggiungono i loro clienti ovunque nel mondo per garantire il massimo servizio possibile. Inizia la sua attività ad Istanbul nel 1998 con un negozio nel ricco quartiere di Nisantasi e dal 2001 approda a New York con uno showroom. Oggi impiega ben cinquantacinque artigiani che nella capitale turca producono a mano abiti e camicie su misura, a mano e non, per una clientela esigente.
Utilizza tessuti italiani ed inglesi e b, per i clienti che la desiderano, è l’asola a contrasto sul bavero o sulla manica. Lavora il fianchino (ripresa parallela a quella del fianco) fino al fondo (foto in basso) e anche il centro-dietro delle sue giacche è fatto a mano, la spalla non è mai vuota, è rotonda e porta sempre un po’ di spallina all’interno. E durante la visita allo showroom newyorkese, un dettaglio su una giacca attira la mia attenzione: una pince orizzontale sotto il bavero – non verticale, come il “cuneo” cui ero abituato - fatta per i clienti forti di petto e di cui riporto una foto in basso. Taji crea il cartamodello dopo aver preso le misure e dopo la consegna vi apporta eventuali modifiche. Il giromanica è aperto, la giacca è in genere a due bottoni, non “tre stirato a due” e i pantaloni sono creati internamente al laboratorio.
